About Carp in Missouri

Carp, now there’s a fish that will give you a good fight. Found in all lakes in Missouri, Carp can be found in almost any depth of water. They are frequently found in shallow murky water where they are looking for food. Carp are one of those fish that can be caught from shore giving those without boats the experience of catching one of the strongest fighting fish. Heavy gear is best when fishing for carp, but for added excitement, lighter gear can be used. Just hang on!

Watch for carp in the early morning and evening hours as they break the surface of the water. Carp are most active from early spring to fall and begin spawning in April. Carp will bite on a variety of baits with dough balls and canned corn being the most popular. Carp will also bite on worms, mussels and even occasionally on a fly flipped on the surface of the water. Rigging methods for carp include weighting bait on the bottom or suspending from a float. Carp are a good fish for new and young anglers to experience the thrill of catching and landing a strong fighting fish.

Unless caught in clean water, carp are not considered good eating fish so please practice catch and release.
